OVERVIEW OF CAMP
The objective of this program is to provide a safe space for adolescents in our community to connect and discuss shared-central themes, topics, and challenges experienced in their everyday lives. Through action-based theatre techniques participants will explore ways to attentively listen and communicate in a creative and empathetic manner; collaborate with other teens and have meaningful conversations about the world through their lens. The workshop series will allow teens to explore empathy and spotlight personal stories; depicting a core theme (decided upon by the participants). The group’s original works will be staged and performed in Muncie Civic’s Studio Theatre at the culmination of the series.
Participants will enhance empathy skills by embodying and witnessing their peers’ experiences by learning the following creative action-based methods:
Playback Theatre: An improvisational theatre form where a person’s stories, memories, or events are shared to a group/audience and then it is reenacted by actors (or in this case: a group of peers) for processing and reflection. Playback Theatre values listening with our hearts to capture the true essence of a story and play it back authentically.
The Viewpoints Techniques: Tangibly explore innovative theatre directors, Bogart’s and Landau’s 9 Viewpoints as a way to engage and cultivate group cohesion, acceptance, and trust. Explore the ways that Viewpoints can be utilized to create original, creative work as well as offer a means to foster awareness of self and others.
Self- Revelatory Theatre: a drama therapy/therapeutic genre of theatre that focuses on an individual’s personal experiences/struggles for healing and personal growth.
